Pure Forms is a startup making low-profile lighting. I was commissioned alongside Desmond Du (opens in a new tab) to create a series of product renders for their then-unnamed Pi 3 downlight. I was responsible for the full scene set-up in Cinema 4D, while Desmond handled the animation of the product’s function and installation.
I converted the STP and STL CAD files supplied by Pure Forms into polygon geometry, then built the complete scene: asset integration, shaders, cameras, and lighting. Every shader used physically based, tileable textures with triplanar projection, matched closely to Pure Forms’ real-world materials. The lighting follows a neutral studio set-up that draws attention to the key areas and the product’s silhouette, and the cameras stay on a narrow focal length to keep its true proportions without distortion. I worked closely with Pure Forms throughout to keep everything visually accurate.
Once the scenes were complete they went to Desmond for the 360-degree rotation and installation animation. The final renders were exported from Cinema 4D, edited in After Effects and Lightroom, and delivered to Pure Forms as masters for their website. You can see the result on the Pi 3 product page (opens in a new tab).
