“Le Top 70” (“Top 70 – the most iconic moments on TV”) is a French and Belgian TV special celebrating television history, and its title sequence premiered on French and Belgian television. I joined as the 3D artist with Desmond Du (opens in a new tab) as art director. I modelled and shaded seven stylised retro television sets and a studio backdrop, assembled the scene in Unreal Engine 5, and set up every shot and camera.
The sets were built in Maya with a modular workflow, so shaders and materials could be swapped on the fly. That gave each set several colour variations and, with a deliberate arrangement, kept a scene of seven identical units from feeling repetitive.
The job was first scoped for Cinema 4D, but moved to Unreal Engine 5 when the client learned a real-time background was possible. The preliminary C4D cameras could not be imported because of the Y-up and Z-up axis difference, so I rebuilt every camera in UE5 and added extra safety shots. The shots were rendered out of UE5, edited in After Effects by Desmond with temporary music, then handed to Leo Marthaler, who completed the stylisation and compositing.
